In Year 11 Chemistry we have been looking into the diversity of materials. Part of this has been examining metals. Students used a piece of zinc metal and a solution of an ionic compound to grow metal crystals in agar. The photograph shows the metallic copper and silver crystals they made. Using agar slows down the growth of the crystals so they are more uniform and spectacular. If you would like to find out more ask a Year 11 Chemist.
