The senior boys football team lead by Connor Brown and Cohen Betts went to Moama on Monday to compete in the HeraldSun Country Cup. The boys first game was against St. Joseph’s and despite some great centre clearance work from Curtis Hayes and Brayden Nevett we could not capitalise on the scoreboard and St. Joseph’s built up a handy 4 goal lead at halftime. In the second half Kyle Saunders created some opportunities with two run down from behind tackles and Luke Pollock took his chances kicking two spectacular goals. The second half broke even and we went down by the halftime margin of 4 goals.

Against Moama Grammar it was a close contest throughout the game. Mitchell Lake and Matt Hore started to clunk some marks and Asher Jones used his electric pace to keep us in the match. James Whiteheads run off half back opened the game up for us and when Cohen Betts kicked a long goal there was only 8 points in it with two minutes remaining. Brayden Nevett took it upon himself to win the game and grabbed the ball out of a ball up and dodged a player before launching a long goal to bring us within 2 points. Unfortunately a holding the ball decision on our half back line allowed Moama to goal and end our hopes of winning the game going down by 8 points.

In the last game against Rochester Secondary Mitchell Lake went to centre half back and was dominant in the air. Curtis Hayes continued to get his hands on the football and was well supported by Tye Haywood, Jack Steele and Andy McCartney. With goals by Matt Hore, Mitchell Hewes and Curtis Hayes it was another tight contest but the hot conditions and little rest lead to Rochester running out the game and eventually winning by 2 goals. MVP for the day was Curtis Hayes. The boys enjoyed the day and played in a great spirit. Disappointing not to get a win but they can hold their heads high knowing they gave their all and were competitive all day, well done!
